Some areas in Southwest Virginia are changing rapidly. As a result we are seeing a decrease of open space, farmland, and forested areas – all affecting our region’s precious natural, rural, and cultural character. Many Southwest Virginians are unaware of existing, voluntary options – such as conservation easements – that can maintain our lands and our quality of life.

The Nature Conservancy named Southwest Virginia one of its "Last Great Places" because of its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Rapid development in Northern and Eastern Virginia has left many wishing they could go back and start over – this time with more deliberate planning. They see that "growth" has often meant loss of the beauty and natural resources they treasure. By working with The Land Trust, Southwest Virginians have the opportunity to conserve our precious natural heritage for future generations as we seek economic opportunities.
